A professional witness is a witness, who by virtue of education, training, skill, or experience, is believed to have expertise and specialised knowledge in a particular subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially and legally rely upon the witness's specialised (scientific, technical or other) opinion about an evidence or fact issue within the scope of his expertise, referred to as the expert opinion.
Professional witness services are now becoming increasingly utilised as part of corporate and workplace strategies to discreetly gather information about a problem or potential problem without causing disruption to the organisation.
Generally a professional witness will be placed within the area of work that the problem exists. Professional witness operatives would work unobtrusively at the appropriate level, from senior management to shop floor in order to uncover the information that a client may be unable to obtain themselves.
This now not only minimises disruption to the client organisation but limits the inconvenience, time spent and cost of addressing concerns. Intelligence that is gathered is generally feedback to the client discreetly via reporting which can come via a range of media. Sometimes video is used as covert surveillance which can often be used as concrete evidence should matters be taken to the courts for judgement.
